Marketing is storytelling, and Godin makes it clear that effective storytelling is key to effective marketing. From his blog: “The truth is elusive. No one knows the truth about anything. We certainly don’t know the truth about the things we buy and recommend and use. What we do know and what we talk about is our story. Our story about why we use, recommend or are loyal. Our story about the origin and the impact and the utility.” This quick read can help you understand how marketing really works and why authenticity is the best approach.
2. The New Rules of Marketing & PR by David Meerman Scott
An instant classic since its first printing, the book was reprinted in July and includes more case studies and real-world examples that cover new digital channels as well as the tried and true. If you want a true understanding of how digital has made its impact on marketing and PR and how your role as a practitioner has changed as a result, this will deliver.
3. Start with Why by Simon Sinek
Sinek became a break-out hit in 2010 when the video of his TEDTalk “How great leaders inspire action” went viral on social media. People were irresistibly drawn the idea of creative work that focuses on the “why” instead of the how and the what. The book helps you understand why some people and organizations are more innovative, more influential and command greater loyalty than others. And it all starts with the “why” of anything you undertake.
